ABOUT ME

Katey Mitchell is a 21-year-old Dancer, Choreographer, and Songwriter based in Nashville, Tennessee who graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in May 2025 with Cum Laude Honors Bachelor's Degree of Science in Dance with a focus in Performance and Choreography. She had amazing opportunities working with choreographers such as Chaz Ryan and Andrea Woodward. She was able to do a lot of performing during her teen years at McGavock High School. She spent much time in her high school show choir department for all 4 years of high school ran by Mitch Fuller doing many choir shows and even theatre productions such as the musical “Hairspray”. Once in college at MTSU she was able to cultivate her love of Contemporary, Jazz, House, Improv, and Hip-Hop on stage and in class. Throughout her time in the MTSU dance program her dancing continued to expand into Modern and Ballet. Katey has participated in the MTSU Fall/Spring concerts and performances through 2021-2025 working with numerous faculty and guest choreographers such as Aaron Allen Jr., Winship Boyd, Kimberly Holt and Alex Winer. She has also performed with the MTSU Performing Arts Company, also known as MPAC starting in 2024. One of Katey's Favorite choreographic works “Mentality” was showcased in the MPAC Fall 2024 Concert. Artist Statement

Artist Statement

Dance is my safe space. When I feel like the walls are closing in, I dance my way out before they can close in on me. It helps me with the process and let go of the emotions I have with the traumatic experiences I have been through in my life. Those experiences are the driving factor to keep me pushing to become a better dancer. I use my choreography and dancing to express how I feel when words aren't enough, so I feel like I still have a voice. Dance saved me and I want my art to inspire young artists to let dance be safe space for them too.

My art reflects how dance is not about how high is your level of technique, it is about passion. If you don't have passion, you don't have drive. Technique is something that can be taught, passion can't be taught. It is never too late to start dancing or to go back to dance. There will always be someone telling you that you’re not a good enough dancer or someone trying to place you in a box. Break that box open and show them what’s really good. A lot of my choreographic works are about letting people shine who usually get thrown in the back corner of works or ones who stand in the wings for most of the piece just to run across the stage to the other wing. Even after getting excluded from formations or a section in a dance these dancers come back in this studio every day and they continue to fight for it. Everyone has something special to contribute to the world of dance and that is why I continue to dance.
